German Language Education Program, FPBS UPI

Established since 1957, this program is one of the pioneering German language programs in Indonesia. The German Language Education Program at FPBS UPI is committed to producing future educators of the German language. It has produced numerous high-quality graduates who work as teachers and lecturers in educational institutions located in various cities in Indonesia. In addition to being educators, graduates of the German Language Education Program also pursue careers in various other industries, such as language schools, tourism, translation, entrepreneurship, and other private sectors.

At its inception, the German Language Education Program (GLEEP) was named the German Language Department, one of the departments in PTPG (Teacher Training College). In 1961, the German Language Department became the Department of German Language and Literature and was under the FKIP at UNPAD. In 1963, when FKIP UNPAD transformed into the Bandung Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP), this study program became one of the departments in the Faculty of Education, Literature, and Arts (FKSS) at IKIP Bandung.

Based on the Decree of the Director-General of Higher Education (Dirjen DIKTI) number: 243/DIKTI/KEP/1996 dated July 11, 1996, GLEEP was established as one of the study programs under the Foreign Language Education Program (JPBA) within the Faculty of Language and Arts Education (FPBS) at IKIP Bandung. With the transformation of IKIP Bandung into the Indonesian University of Education (UPI) in 1999, GLEEP became a study program within the JPBA at FPBS UPI.

Since 2016, the official nomenclature for this program has been the 'Department of German Language Education.' At the beginning of 2021, the department's name was changed back to the 'German Language Education Program' based on the Rector's Regulation of UPI Number 045 of 2020 concerning the Organizational Structure and Work Procedures (SOTK) of the Indonesian University of Education.

Graduates of the German Language Education Program at the Bachelor's level (S1) are expected to be able to achieve competencies in line with the Indonesian National Qualifications Framework (KKNI) at level 6. Graduates of the German Language Education Program (S-1) can work as German language educators, both in senior high schools (SMA) and vocational high schools (SMK), as well as instructors in non-formal education institutions. In addition, graduates can also work as translators and interpreters and as language professionals in the field of tourism.

The German Language Education Program collaborates with foreign institutions from Germany, such as the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst/DAAD) and the Goethe-Institut. Currently, partnerships have also been established with the Pedagogical University of Heidelberg (Pedagogische Hochschule Heidelberg). All of these institutions provide opportunities for outstanding lecturers and students to pursue German language education in Germany. Institutionally, the German Language Education Program is currently a member of the Association of German Language Education Programs in Indonesia, and its lecturers are members of the Association of German Studies in Indonesia (AGI).
